When Nike debuted the Shox system in the year 2000 it felt like the future had come. The idea first popped into the mind of Bruce Kilgore all the way back in 1984. Bruce observed indoor track sprinters bounced after hitting the ground through their stride. For 16 years Nike experimented with the concept of a spring system but it wasn’t until the new millennium that they released the first Shox shoe.

Although released initially aimed at runners, when Team USA’s Vince Carter dunked over French 7’2″ center Frédéric Weis in his signature Shox BB4 the tech took centre stage.

Shox started as heel cushioning but much like Air, a full-length version was always coming. The Shox TL brought the quirky suspension system to the whole midsole, incorporating multiple points of contact for a responsive feel. Whilst time would see Shox phased-out by Nike, the insane look looms large in the minds of social media moodboard admins looking to one-up each other.
